The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut on Saturday defrocked a priest, citing concerns about the financial condition of a Bristol church and the priest's decision to take an unauthorized sabbatical.

Connecticut Bishop Andrew D. Smith deposed Mark H. Hansen, formerly of St. John's Church in Bristol. The action is the final step that an Episcopal bishop can take toward a priest because it effectively ends his priesthood.
