(March 6, 2006) — The local Episcopal diocese filed a lawsuit this morning asking for the property of the former All Saints Protestant Episcopal Church. The Irondequoit congregation was "dissolved" by the diocese in November, so the property should be returned, the suit states.
The diocese is holding a news conference at 3 p.m. and will release a statement then.

The church, now known as All Saints Anglican Church, has refused to hand over the keys to the building and continues to meet there.Problems started when All Saints withheld $16,000 from the diocese because it disagreed with the diocese's support of the ordination of a gay bishop in New Hampshire in 2003. That ordination caused widespread dissension among Episcopalians and Anglicans.

Also, All Saints said individual dioceses should not have been given the right to decide whether to bless same-sex unions.

The congregation has since joined the Church of the Province of Uganda, a separate church within the Anglican Communion. Like the Episcopal Church of the USA, it has roots in the Church of England.
