Anglican rift over `liberal' theology

It's not Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori's gender that troubles all of her conservative detractors in the
Episcopal Church. It's her theology, which is liberal with a capital L.

Conservatives say that brand of theology--which also opened the door to the church's first openly
gay bishop--threatens to tear apart not only the Episcopal Church but the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Though Jefferts Schori's views reflect the majority mindset of the American church, experts say her election as the first female presiding Episcopal bishop could hamper efforts at reconciliation.

Even a concession made last week at the church's national meeting--a resolution urging dioceses to deny the consecration of more openly gay bishops--did nothing to stave off anxiety on both sides. Jefferts Schori said she backed passage of the resolution as a necessary temporary fix, though she objected to its premise.
