Anglican Church 'hung up on sex'

THE Anglican Church is preoccupied with sex and in need of "spiritual therapy" to restore its sense of priorities, the Archbishop of Perth, the Most Reverend Roger Herft, will tell his diocese's annual synod today.

And in an apparent dig at the conservative politics of the powerful Sydney diocese, which does not ordain women, he questioned the slow progress of the Australian church towards appointing women bishops.

In his address, Mr Herft warns there is a danger the church will "become obsessed with human sleeping arrangements and lose out on living our lives with an inner integrity that acts with justice and mercy to all humanity".

It is one of a number of pointed references to the bitter debate within the worldwide church about whether to allow priests in same-sex relationships or blessing of same-sex unions.
