From the Church of England Newspaper: Lambeth Funding Crisis Denied
By George Conger

The Anglican Consultative Council has denied suggestions that the 2008 Lambeth Conference is in jeopardy due to a lack of funding.

The 2008 conference will be “funded for the most part by the registrations and fees of its participants,” a spokesman for the ACC told The Church of England Newspaper, and will be organized differently than its predecessors. The 2008 Conference “will not be a copy of previous conferences but will have a identity and life of its own.”

The “constant is Canterbury, both the person and the cathedral, serving as visible signs of our Communion world-wide,” the spokesman said.

Speculation that the American church, which funds a third of the ACC’s operations through its National Church offices in New York, may withdraw its financial backing has prompted speculation the conference was in jeopardy. The decision by the ACC to suspend its support has also prompted cancellation fears.

The 1998 Conference drew approximately 750 bishops and cost approximately £2 million. While the July 16-Aug 3, 2008 Conference will be four days shorter than the 1998 Conference, inflation, exchange rate fluctuations and an increase in bishops from the burgeoning Global South may well push costs over £2.5 million.
