Unknown to his allies and comrades in battle, Denethor has been "seeing the future" -- or at least, believing that he sees the future -- by looking into the Palantir. But the images that the Palantir shows are controlled by Sauron and, though truthful in the strict sense of the word, wildly misinterpreted by Denethor. Frame by frame, the Palantir shows destruction -- the ships with black flags sailing toward the city [which Denethor wrongly yet understandably believes to be further reinforcements to the enemy], Frodo captured in the tower [though Sauron does not recognize the importance of Frodo's capture], and on and on.
