Christian or not, Nativity captures artisans' fancy
Couple's collection shows global appeal of creche-making

In the eyes of one Italian artist, Joseph, not Mary, holds the baby Jesus on his lap.

In Krakow an artist chose to show the Holy Family sitting in a dazzling castle, while in Singapore two Taoist brothers presented Mary in the likeness of their own faith's goddess of mercy.

All three works of art interpret the singular moment of the birth of Christ. But filtered through the prism of the artist's own culture, custom and faith, the scene can be reflected back in a hundred different ways, as evidenced by an exhibit at the Loyola University Museum of Art.
