India puts a price on dwindling girls

INDIA'S poor families will be paid to give birth to girls in a bid to stop parents aborting female foetuses.
The scheme, announced by the Government this week, is aimed at preventing half a million abortions a year.
A series of cash payments amounting to 15,500 rupees ($A415) will be paid to poor families in seven states to keep their girl children. Ministers say more than 100,000 girls will be saved in the first year. the rest image
