Archbishop's fears over attitudes to human life

11/05/2008

The Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed his fears about embryo experimentation ahead of the first detailed debate of the Government's controversial embryology bill in the House of Commons.

Dr Rowan Williams raised concerns about so-called "saviour siblings" and animal-human hybrids, backed calls for a reduced time limit for abortion and warned of a possible "drift towards a new attitude to human life".

Writing in a Sunday newspaper, he said of the proposals within the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill: "We condemn rape, torture and blackmail.

"We don't allow experiments on people's bodies and minds without their consent. And we don't breed human individuals to create a pool of organs that could be transplanted to save the lives of others." the rest image
