Darkest hour at Lambeth

WHILE Sydney is embracing Popemania and aspires to unity in the wider Catholic Church, it is a different story for Anglicans.

Tomorrow, the Lambeth Conference of Bishops of the worldwide Anglican Church begins in Canterbury, England.

Lambeth will be presided over by Dr Rowan Williams, the leader of global Anglicans and Archbishop of Canterbury. But five Sydney bishops together with Sydney's Archbishop, Dr Peter Jensen, will not attend.

The six Sydney men have boycotted Lambeth over the ordination of gay clergy and ordination of women as bishops. These are issues they believe reflect a liberalisation of the Anglican Communion.
