The majority of Protestants and evangelicals believe that good people and people of other religions can go to heaven, according to author David Campbell.

Campbell, who co-wrote American Grace, How Religion Divides and Unites Us, contends that surveys of 3,000 Americans, used to write the book, show that American people of faith, though devout, are very tolerant. So much so that most believers also believe that good people, despite their religious affiliation, can go to heaven.

Among the faiths, 83 percent of evangelical Protestants agreed that good people of other religions can go to heaven. Ninety percent of black Protestants also believe good people can go to heaven.

When prodded further, more than half – 54 percent – of evangelical Protestants said yes, people of religions other than Christianity can go to heaven. Sixty-two percent of black Protestants agreed with the statement. the rest

One of my colleagues, a CRC pastor, has talked about "justification by decision," a thought common among many who might call themselves evangelicals, that one is justified by God on the basis of making "a decision for Christ" at some point in one's life.

There is raging ignorance over the true nature of the human condition and of the means whereby God has dealt with that condition.

Most people think, it seems to me, that the human condition is one of ignorance and a tendency to be selfish. They see God grading on a curve, making "a decision for Christ" being worth a huge amount of "points" to reach that curve, and of other people being reasonably good as also getting many "points."

If most "Evangelicals" believe that good people are heaven-bound, then most "Evangelicals" are not Evangelical at all. Evangelical recognize the utter sinfulness of sin and the complete helplessness of sinners to merit God's approval.

Nor do the recognize the imputation of the righteousness of Christ as being needed to stand before God. Human goodness, as the world at large sees goodness is good enough, they think. In believing this, they reveal their ignorance of the Bible.

It is a shame.
