Last week, I plucked up the courage to visit ground-zero, that is, that part of south Minneapolis wherein Floyd, Good and Pretti needlessly lost their lives. I was appalled by what I saw. The sordid squalor of George Floyd Square remains in place, surrounding buildings covered in some of the most obscene and minatory graffiti I’ve ever seen, its grime accentuated by the melting snow. It seems to me that what is taking place in the Twin Cities, especially Minneapolis, augurs a departure in American culture, something dark and dystopic and that has as its goal the ultimate destruction of the country I’ve come to love very much indeed, a country the world, if it’s honest, needs more than ever if the standards that have their origins in Western or, if you prefer, Christian civilisation are to survive.
