Matt Kennedy+: Hope Fades: Windsor Defiance
A tragic day for the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion
June 19, 5:12 am
After sitting through a week of intense committee meetings and listening to all of the discussions; after waiting three years for this Convention and the decisions to be made, I think it is finally dawning on me that the Episcopal Church is not turning back.
Earlier in the week, Tuesday and Wednesday, noticing the growing cooperation between the orthodox and institutional left on the committee, I began to see a glimmer. The glimmer grew to something of a hope. The hope was based on my belief that this cooperation might be the beginning of a coalition that, if representative of Convention as a whole, might produce and affirm Windsor compliant resolutions.
I also assumed, as a matter of course, that the PB election would be the first public vehicle Convention would use to signal moderation to the rest of the Anglican Communion. The new PB, +Alexander or +Jenkins, would perform grandly at his first public press conference speaking warmly about Communion relationships and the need to “walk together”.
This would set the stage for the SCECAC resolutions hitting the floor where if the coalition held, they would be voted through.
That was my hope.
What a difference a day makes.
