[Episcopal News Service] Clergy and lay delegates to the reconvened 2006 annual convention in the Episcopal
Diocese of South Carolina June 9 overwhelmingly approved two measures to permit the diocese to suspend normal bylaws and convene a special electing convention on August 4.

The expectation is that the convention, to meet at
St. James Church on St. James Island, will re-elect the Very Rev. Mark Lawrence as its next bishop.

South Carolina has been without a diocesan bishop since Bishop Edward L. Salmon Jr., reached the mandatory retirement age of 72 (Article II, Section 9 of the
Episcopal Church's Constitution) in January 2006. He continues to serve as acting bishop, having been invited to do so by the South Carolina Standing Committee. the rest
