It is difficult to identify the source(s) of this broad contemporary shift toward a disembodied faith. Perhaps two centuries of academic skepticism with regard to the historicity of the bodily Resurrection and Ascension has succeeded in refocusing Christians away from the once foundational hope in the general Resurrection as a real future event? That is, perhaps in the age of Marcus Borg and the Da Vince Code, average Christian people, not just radical skeptics and carnal “Christians”, have effectively, if subconsciously, surrendered, given up hope in the real restoration of creation and the literal Resurrection of the body and, as a result, begun to content themselves with a “demythologized”, other-worldly, experience-centered “faith”?
