Massive quake tests China on reaction to major crisis

Nearly 10,000 killed; response studied as Summer Games loom

BEIJING — Chinese troops searched for survivors in collapsed schools and other buildings today after the country's worst earthquake in three decades killed nearly 10,000 people.

The communist government sent 20,000 rescue workers to Sichuan province, where the magnitude-7.9 quake leveled 80% of the buildings in some areas Monday. Shattered roads and heavy rains cut off the worst-hit areas. the rest
