Teen charged with arson in church fire

Pottersville, NY - AP) - A teenager is accused of setting the fire that burned down a North Country Episcopal church last month.

Fire destroyed Christ Church Episcopal on Route 9 in Pottersville — 85 miles north of Albany — on May 30th. The Warren County sheriff says an exhaustive investigation led to a 15-year-old Chester boy. The sheriff says the teen doused the church with gasoline and then torched it.

He's being charged as a juvenile. Police say two other teens could also be facing charges.

The fire followed two burglaries at the church in mid-May. Religious items were taken, a statue of the Virgin Mary was smashed, and a warning was written in the margin of a Bible.

Christ Church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany. the rest
