Baltimore Bridge Collapse; America’s Stunning Embrace Of Paganism ...more

Pray for the missing, and the survivors of the FSK Bridge collapse. The immediate is a thankfully small human tragedy. What is to come will be much worse.
Baltimore is about the 12th or 13th busiest port in the United States. For all intents and purposes, consider it offline for at least a year. For the next few months, the ships that are there are likely to stay there, and no new ships will arrive. This is going to have several major impacts.

The Baltimore Bridge Collapse Is Going to Have an Enormous Impact on U.S. Supply Chains   The Port of Baltimore — the biggest handler of US imports and exports of cars and light trucks — looks to be out of commission indefinitely. The resulting bottleneck could accelerate a shift of goods through West Coast ports.

America’s Stunning Embrace Of Paganism Signals The End Of This Country As We Know It  There is no secular utopia waiting for us in the post-Christian, neopagan world now coming into being — no future in which we get to retain the advantages and benefits of Christendom without the faith from which they sprang. Western civilization and its accoutrements depend on Christianity, not just in the abstract but in practice. Liberalism relies on a source of vitality that does not originate from it and that it cannot replenish. That source is the Christian faith, in the absence of which we will revert to an older form of civilization, one in which power alone matters and the weak and the vulnerable count for nothing.
What awaits us on the other side of Christendom, in other words, is a pagan dark age. Here, in the second decade of the 21st century, we can say with some confidence that this dark age has begun. [Read it all]

Legal issues aside, it's worth noting that squatters' rights laws end up harming the very people they are supposed to help: low-income tenants. If property owners have reason to fear that squatters can occupy their land without their consent, they will be less willing to rent property to begin with, charge higher rents, screen potential tenants more carefully (thereby potentially excluding those with low income, few or nor references, and the like), or some combination of all of these measures. They may also be incentivized to impose more costly and elaborate security restrictions on access to land (which in turn is likely to raise rents). All of this predictably reduces the availability of housing and increases its costs.

Whether it is appointments to boards, medical care, college admissions, jobs or other benefits, unfair considerations of race now predominate.  Policies discriminating against whites and other groups — Asians, for example — are falsely hailed as reparative for targeted minorities.
The process began in the 1960s, with the slow abandonment of the constitutional ideal forbidding any form of racial distinction.  Then, DEI and social justice, and later, sexual orientation (in 1998) and gender identity (in 2014), became pervasive.  This new racism violates the basic tenets of our constitutional republic.  It should not be allowed to stand.
